Introduction

The Christian life is not a playground — it is a battlefield. Paul writes to the Ephesian church not to scare them, but to equip them. In Ephesians 6:10-18, he outlines the complete armor of God, each piece serving a specific purpose in our spiritual defense and advance.

The Belt of Truth (v.14a)

The Roman soldier's belt held everything together. Without it, the tunic would be loose and the sword would have nothing to hang from. Truth is the foundation.

The Breastplate of Righteousness (v.14b)

The breastplate protected the heart and vital organs. Righteousness — not our own, but the righteousness of Christ imputed to us — guards our heart against condemnation.

The Shield of Faith (v.16)

The large Roman shield could be soaked in water to extinguish flaming arrows. Faith does not mean the arrows stop coming. It means they cannot penetrate when your trust in God is raised.

The Sword of the Spirit (v.17b)

This is the only offensive weapon in the list. The Word of God, spoken in faith, is how Jesus defeated Satan in the wilderness.
